Public Safety
Public safety is a priority for Councilmember Shropshire. She is a firm believer there is a direct link to quality of life and public safety. Neighborhoods become vibrant, and strong social connections are made when residents feel safe.
Illegal trash dumping, excessive litter, graffiti, and other nuisance crimes are small indicators of declining neighborhoods that may cause residents to perceive a city as unsafe even though crime statistics suggest otherwise. Councilmember Shropshire supports East Points annual free Amnesty Bulk Pick-up in that provides residents and businesses an opportunity to rid themselves of bulk waste items, which helps to mitigate illegal dumping.
A proponent of community policing, Councilmember Shropshire sponsored a public private partnership that allows police officers to live in a high crime apartment complex rent free to help reduce criminal activity. Other public safety initiatives spearheaded by Councilmember Shropshire include the Street Racing Ordinance, to stop street racing in East Point, and the installation of cameras in the park, to address tagging, graffiti, and other nuisance crimes while deterring criminal activity.
Councilmember Shropshire was appointed to serve on the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee by The National League of Cities where she has served since 2014.
Economic Development
Economic development is a priority for Councilmember Shropshire with a major focus on downtown development. She has and continues to identify opportunities to provide exposure to the city. “Wednesday Wind Down In the Point” is an example of such an event. It serves as an economic development tool designed to enhance awareness of East Point and attract new businesses and residents to the city, while enhancing tourism. The summer concert series also provides an opportunity to showcase downtown revitalization efforts including East Point’s $15.8 million government center.
Councilmember Shropshire is planning to host a “Developers’ Tour,” in which local developers will learn about development opportunities in East Point. The tour will culminate with lunch and presentations by government officials.
East Point possesses many key attributes including quaint community charm, affordable housing, 33 unique neighborhoods, and close proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is Councilmember Shropshire’s desire for East Point to become the city of choice for businesses and individuals in search of a new destination to call home.
Senior Citizens
Councilmember Shropshire respects and appreciates senior citizens. These are parents, grandparents and great grandparents who have made major contributions to the city’s history.
Councilmember Shropshire continues to identify opportunities that address the needs of East Point senior citizens and improves their quality of life. For the past year, Councilmember Shropshire has been delivering boxes of food from the weekly giveaway to senior citizens . She collaborated with the organization “Men of Intelligence”, to provide lawn service for eligible senior and disabled residents to promote health and safety. Councilmember Shropshire also hosted a self-defense and active shooter training for seniors, and partnered with JenCare Senior Medical Center to administer the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to them.
Working in collaboration with the East Point Police Department, Councilmember Shropshire is planning to host educational seminars to reduce incidents of crime against seniors who are often victims of frauds and scams.
Councilmember Shropshire will create “Senior Connection” to expand the network among senior citizens throughout metropolitan She will capitalize on relationships with elected officials in other jurisdictions to collaborate on senior initiatives and learn about activities East Point seniors can participate in. The purpose of the “Senior Connections” initiative is to create opportunities for senior citizens to interact socially and develop new friendships.
